Kissable Lips

The winter months of extreme cold and wind can be damaging to our skin, particularly those areas constantly exposed.  The summer, while not so obviously a threat to one’s lips can also be the cause for exposure from excessive sun exposure.  Our lips are on the front lines only masked with a thin layer of skin to protect them.  They are one of the most important parts of our body – the entry point for food and beverage intake, an integral part of expressing ourselves, frowning, smiling, and most importantly for kissing!

We can’t give you statistics on how many people struggle with chapped lips in the US because there are no surveys or studies that give us a reliable estimate.

Some of the factors that cause chapped lips include dry or cold weather, exposure to the wind or sun, excessive licking of the lips, and certain medications.

While chapped lips are a common condition that many people struggle with during their lifetime, some may be more severe than others.

The scientific name for chapped lips is “cheilitis”.  There are many things you can do on your own to address this but if it persists or becomes unmanageable, it’s important to visit your dermatologist.

What we do know is that if you’re struggling with it, we want to help!

Some of the symptoms of chapped lips

  • Dryness
  • Flaking
  • Scales
  • Sores
  • Swelling
  • Cracks
  • Bleeding

What causes chapped lips?

Did you know that the lips don’t have any oil glands like other parts of your skin?  That means that your lips are more prone to drying out and becoming dry and/or cracked.  The problem can get worse if there is a lack of moisture.  This lack of moisture can be a result of weather or simply overlooking care for your lips and basic hydration.

If there is limited humidity in your environment, this can cause chapped lips as well.  And, if you’re a sun god or goddess, that constant sun exposure may also impact the condition of your lips.

If you find yourself licking your lips often, the saliva also may strip your lips of the needed moisture and create dryness.

Drugs we may take that dry out our lips

What’s fair to say is that a lot of people struggle with chapped lips.  Those that have dry skin to begin with are more susceptible to dry lips.  There are also some medications that you may be taking that can have an impact.

We are not suggesting you stop taking them because they are likely very important and necessary as prescribed by your health care practitioner.

Some medications or supplements you may be taking that can result in chapped lips include:

  • Retinoids (Retin-A, Differin, Tazorac, Accutane)
  • Vitamin A
  • Lithium (used for bipolar disorder)
  • Chemotherapy Drugs

We suggest speaking with your health care practitioner to determine what course is best for you to use to address your dry, chapped lips.

However, if you’d like to, after speaking with your physician, try a natural, plant-based wellness solution, then, you may wish to consider CBD-infused lip balm.

What makes your lips less kissable?

You may be surprised to learn that dry, chapped lips are very common but that doesn’t make you feel any better.  Left untreated, an issue that may have been slight could turn severe with cracks and peeling.

For all you spicy food lovers and those that live in more temperate climates, you aren’t safe either.  Damage brought on by eating spicy food, the sun or dry climates also contribute to chapped lips.  People often find themselves licking their lips more often in these circumstances which may cause more harm.  And, yes, spicy food might be a favorite of yours, but it too can result in chapped lips.

Another factor many overlook is the impact medication may have on your lips.  Many over-the-counter and prescription medications may have some side effects, one of which, chapped lips.

How can you relieve chapped lips?

There are many things you may consider doing to keep your lips in tip-top shape for whatever you have planned for them.

We are all about providing you with education, tips, and tricks to promote overall health and wellness.

Here’s a handful of things to keep your lips youthful:

  1. Apply Lip balm throughout the day – remember, your lips don’t produce oils to hydrate them so selecting a lip balm that will defend your lips from a host of natural elements is essential.  Have you tried CBD lip balm?  It’s all of nature’s plant-based wellness wrapped up in a moisturizing product that will rejuvenate and restore your lips to their thirst-quenched state.  Bundled with soothing ingredients, we anticipate you’ll fall in love with this must-have like many of our customers have.

CBD lip balm works to moisturize and replenish dry, damaged lips.  It’s nourishing and anecdotal evidence suggests that it may help address issues commonly found with chapped lips.

CBD-infused lip balm has a handful of antioxidants that will rescue your luscious lips.

  2. Hydration – it’s critical that you remain hydrated throughout the day.  That doesn’t mean a handful of soft drinks and caffeine can dehydrate you.  When you deprive your body of needed hydration, your skin feels it the most.  For your lip’s sake – drink lots of water throughout the day.

  3. Using a humidifier – using a humidifier in your home adds moisture into the air to eliminate a dry environment.  (Don’t worry – it won’t mess up your hair if you keep it on low).

  4. Exfoliate your lips – this can help eliminate some of the dry, flaky skin that  builds up on your lips and may help restore some of the smoothness and softness.  You can make a natural solution at home or purchase one of the many available.
